IAPSS April Newsletter

Although I am very new to the role as a lobbyist for our association, I am experiencing some unusual circumstances with this session of the legislature. Even in the short session last winter and spring, it was filled with a great number of bills moving at lightning speed and it was hard to keep up and track bills. This long session started out in a similar fashion, but has slowed considerably in the second half of the session. Of course, I asked our seasoned veterans if this session “felt” different to them. They admitted that it did appear to be different. Now, I worry about the remainder of the session behaving differently and I will be watching for some important aspects of bills moving into other bills and silently passing under the radar.
With the House budget revealing a much needed cash infusion for Indiana public schools, albeit with some consternation centered around the complexity dollars for high poverty schools, it appears there is a focus on funding public schools with some focus on restoration of respect for public education and teachers. There appears to be acknowledgement of the damage done with past practices that demonize teachers and public schools, and the risk posed of losing quality educators and discouraging others to enter the field of education to the detriment of our Hoosier schools. That is a refreshing change of past sessions. However, the devil is in the details and we still have 28 days left in this session as of this writing to see if the winds change direction.
Remember, superintendents and education leaders, your voice matters and conversation with your local legislators make a difference. Be proud and be loud!
We are gearing up for the IAPSS Spring Seminar April 29, 2015 at the Palms in Plainfield, IN. We are encouraging leadership teams to attend and we are providing a substantial registration fee incentive for your team members to attend with you.
Plans are well underway for completing the plans for joint IAPSS/ISBA Fall Conference scheduled for September 28-29, 2015 at the Indianapolis Convention Center. We have two dynamic keynote speakers and we are formatting presentations differently with the use of strands as topics of four presenters for each of the four strands.
Of special note, we have moved the IAPSS Annual Conference to the Hyatt Regency Downtown Indianapolis December 13-15, 2015. We have engaged a very special keynote that will speak to the 21 Attributes of Effective Leaders. We too are moving to a strand format and we will be seeking presenters from our Indiana education leaders very soon.
Please enjoy the joys and renewal that spring brings to all of us. Remember, leadership matters.
