Dr. J. T. Coopman, Executive Director

Following the legislative session, IAPSS quickly moved to the Spring District meetings held in all eight IAPSS districts located throughout the state. IAPSS business was conducted with appointment of district chairs, and committee appointments made, as well as plans for the district superintendents of the year nominations. Very informative presentations were made by Katie Jenner, Ivy Tech, regarding their newest initiatives for dual college credits and recruiting future teachers; Sarah Larrison, IDOE Special Education Specialist, provided updates on RTI, and MTSS used in conjunction with data analysis to provide better outcomes of students in special education programs; Stephanie Wells, VP of the Indiana Manufacturers Association, presented information on how schools can connect with local manufacturers with the new FAME model that is being developed; Dr. J. T. Coopman, Executive Director of IAPSS, provided updates from the 2019 General Assembly.  IAPSS thanks each district chair for their hard work in preparing for these meetings and arranging for the locations and food preparations.

IAPSS installed Mr. John Hunter as the 2019-20 President of IAPSS at a wonderful two ceremony in Valparaiso, Indiana on June 6th and 7th. Tours of local points of interest included the Albanese Candy factory, Firehose Tips Manufacturing and Museum, and the Indiana State and National Dunes Parks. The installation luncheon was held at the Avalon Event Center which included the swearing in of all officers and executive committee members including Mr. Hunter, Superintendent, Union Twp. North Schools, as the president. An outstanding pianist played during orders, and then we were entertained by the combined elementary, middle, and high school choirs from Union Twp. North schools performing Disney themed musical pieces. IAPSS congratulates Mr. Hunter as the new president of IAPSS, his school board and community for this prestigious honor.

IAPSS sponsored the first ever IAPSS/IDOE Educational Summit. The Summit began with the first 100 registrants awarded hotel accommodations at the JW Marriott and baseball game tickets with a buffet at the Indianapolis Indians game on Thursday evening, June 13th. On Friday, the various departments in the Indiana Department of Education provided indepth updates on work the departments were engaged in on behalf of Indiana public schools. This was a very successful first-time event we hope to replicate in the future.

IAPSS wants to thank and congratulate Dr. Jim Freeland who served as the IAPSS Director of Membership Services for over 10 years is retiring again after retiring as a school superintendent.
