IAPSS Presidents Letter – May 2020

Posted on May 5, 2020
“We’re Soarin, flying, there’s not a star in heaven that we can’t reach…you know the world can see us in a way that’s different than who we are. Creating space between us till we are separate hearts.”
These words from the High School Musical’s Breaking Free seem appropriate in these unprecedented times. I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams that my time as President of the IAPSS would be coming to a close under such unparalleled circumstances. While there is much uncertainty and confusion surrounding our day to day lives, there has remained one constant and unflappable influence, the service and dedication that is evident in the leadership that every Superintendent of  public schools is providing their students, staff, parents and  communities. Thank you for all you are doing as we continue to serve our communities and provide for the myriad of needs in the era of COVID-19.
I certainly never thought we would live under conditions that so limit what we do in our “normal” lives. Even Disney World has yet to reopen. Speculation and rumor exists as to what our future will look like. With the upcoming preparation for starting the next school year so many questions remain unanswered. Will we reopen our schools for the 2020-2021 school year in the traditional format or is there some hybrid version that is yet to be presented? These are clearly unprecedented times, but time and again in our world of K-12 public education the influence and impact of strong leadership is adding a reassuring positive response to this unknown challenges. I believe our “new normal” is yet to be determined. But regardless of what that “new normal” looks like, I am confident that under the leadership of my peers and colleagues, whatever is ahead of us will be taken in stride towards continued excellence.
I remain hopeful that we will one day, rejoin in whatever social gathering configuration is deemed appropriate. Like all of our year end activities, the inauguration of Dr. Tracey Lorey will also be very different this year. Please be watching for details of the event. I would like to take this time to thank you for allowing me the honor to serve as president of IAPSS this year. I have enjoyed working with each of you. I will continue to offer all that I can through the end of my term, June 2020. If I can be of assistance to any, please reach out.
In closing, I offer these words from another familiar High School Musical hit, “We’re all in this together”:
Once we know, that we are –
We’re all stars
And we see that, We’re all in this together –
And it shows
When we stand, Hand in hand
Make our dreams come true”
John Hunter, President
