Mentoring vs. Coaching

Mentors share their past experiences as examples to help you answer your questions.
Coaches ask questions that help you find your own answers. Coaching goes deeper into the client’s specific challenges and often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.
Consider the analogy below: You are preparing to climb a mountain.

A mentor is like that seasoned mountaineer who has already conquered the peak. They are there to share their own stories, lessons learned, and their unique path to the summit. They won't necessarily join you on your climb, but their wisdom-filled adventure tales might inspire you and reveal new perspectives about your journey.

A coach is like a dedicated mountain guide. They walk alongside you, continually assessing your progress, helping you maneuver around obstacles and fine-tune your strategies, encouraging you to build the best path for yourself. They might not have summited this exact mountain (your unique professional journey), but they have the tools, knowledge, and expertise to facilitate your climb to the very top.

About Our ExCo Coaches

The most talented and successful Indiana school leaders are selected to become coaches for ExCo. Our coaches are trained extensively through the Harvard Division of Continuing Education Professional and Executive Development program and these coaches will participate in ongoing IAPSS professional development support sessions.

Interested in Participating in the ExCo Program

IAPSS is pleased to launch a new opportunity for practicing superintendents who want to elevate their leadership journey and transform their professional lives. IAPSS strategically pairs coach partners (that’s you!) with experienced executive coaches who are trained to guide you through a thought-provoking and creative coaching process. Together, you will identify strategic goals, develop actionable plans, enhance your leadership practices, and unlock your full potential. Through the coaching process, you will learn how to show up as the best version of yourself, maximize your impact in your district community, and achieve higher levels of fulfillment in all aspects of your life.

Prerequisites for ExCo Participation:

  • Must be a member of IAPSS.

  • Must be a sitting superintendent serving in the second year or beyond.

  • Must commit to participate in a minimum of 12 sessions with a maximum of 18 sessions (hybrid of in-person and virtual) over a nine-month time period. 

IAPSS ExCo Experience will be offered free of charge to 15 selected applicants for the 2024-25 school year.

2024-2025 Program Timeline

  • Interested Individuals Can Begin to Complete the Online Application

  • Coach and Coach Partner Pairing Begins

  • Selected Coach Partners will Find Out Who Will Be Serving as Their Executive Coach

  • The Nine Month Term for the ExCo Experience Gets Underway
